The Quick Gun Murugun Movie Review

The Good, The Bad, And The Pretty - The Quick Gun Murugun Movie Review

Hats off to this gaudily dressed Tamil cowboy, an unlikely superhero with a heart of gold and a tongue that shoots off punchy one-liners sleeker than the ricocheting bullets from his gun.

Mind it! Quick Gun Murugun, the spoofy western from the south is loaded with wackiest fun and action you could imagine. The movie picks up every masala from the popular films made in the last few decades, and seasons it with a generous smattering of slapstick comedy conceived by writer Rajesh Devraj and director Shashanka Ghosh, the duo who originally created the Quickgun character for a music channel some 15 years ago.

The appreciable thing about ‘Quick Gun Murugun’ is that even though it spoofs the popular stereotypes from Hindi and Tamil films, it remains very original and innovative in its presentation. In the film, you’ll come across some of the wackiest names and characters. There’s a McDosa Corporation, there’s an Institute for Coconut Climbing, and of course, the Swarglok where you see a dapperly dressed Chitragupta (Vinay Pathak) keeping the death count.

Quickgun Murugan (Dr. Rajendra Prasad) is a South Indian cowboy with the most flamboyant style and the most garish outfits ever seen on any hero. He’s the dosa-loving superhero who embraces vegetarianism and takes on his arch rival Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser), an unscrupulous ‘Rascala’ who wants to make non-veg dosas in the cheapest way possible.

In his battle against the evil Reddy, the good Murugun is helped by the pretty and voluptuous Mango Dolly (Rambha) who loves and yearns for Murugun even though the cowboy’s heart is torn between Dolly and his ex flame Locket Lover (Anu Menon).

The movie is packed with crunchy dialogues, funny situations and over-the-top action that is more hilarious than thrilling. But after a while the gags seem to lose their potency - particularly in the second half when the battle between Murugun and Reddy is stretched beyond the necessary.

The heart and soul of the film is doubtlessly Dr. Rajendra Prasad whose controlled hamming and histrionics make the character Quick Gun so likeable. Nasser makes a credible foe of the gun-toting cowboy while Rambha (in a blonde wig and low-neck dresses) is a treat to the eyes.

In a nutshell, ‘Quick Gun Murugun’ is good fun. Give it a shot.

Movie Review: Shadow

Producer Naseer Khan: I will never venture into action flicks again, says newly turned producer-actor Naseer Khan.

Blind in real life and miraculous on-screen with his scary stunts, Naseer Khan is stepping into B-Town with an action-thriller film called Shadow.

On asking why this sudden disliking towards a particular genre, he explains, Shadow has some terrific stunts featured on me.

However, enacting those stunts was certainly not a cakewalk.

I would never take a retake for I would be so terrified with every new stunt, I had to attempt harder every time.

Life Partner - Movie Review

It’s a formula done to death and buried for good. But director Rumi Jaffrey exhumes it, tries to give it a new garb and a new twist in his strictly average film Life Partner, starring Fardeen Khan, Genelia D’Souza, Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai and Govinda.

Set in Cape Town, the movie deals with the archaic (in)compatibility question of life partners - how sharing your life 24x7 with someone can be drastically different from how one imagines it to be. So here we have Karan (Fardeen) and Sanjana (Genelia) doubtlessly in love with each other, while the under-confident and gawky Gujju boy Bhavesh (Tusshar) is so clueless about how to treat girls that he has to jot down tips from the couple. And even after all the jotting, he chooses to settle for an arranged marriage with an Indian girl Prachi (Prachi Desai) from an affluent family in Gujarat. Likewise, Karan and Sanjana also tie the knot.

But Karan and Bhavesh’s friend Jeet (Govinda), who is a divorce lawyer and doesn’t believe in the institution of marriage, tries to convince them that they have done the biggest mistake of their life by tying the knot.

The two marriages - one love, another arranged - meet their expected destiny as soon as the couples’ honeymoon is over. Karan is unable to keep up with the flippant attitude and extravagant lifestyle of Sanjana. She gives him sleepless nights for all the wrong reasons. On the other hand, Prachi is unable to fit into the traditional household of Bhavesh, with his autocratic and chauvinistic father (Darshan Zariwala) who gives lecture on parampara at the every drop of hat.

‘Life Partner’ begins on a light note and packs in a few moments of humour and romance in the first half. But as the story stretches into the second half, the proceedings take a serious turn. There’s marital strife, heartache and melodrama. However, all this chaff doesn’t pinch as much as the ludicrous climax that conveniently tries to iron out all the complications with one swipe. And that’s a big downer.
Director Rumi Jaffrey fails to give a definite premise to the film. What starts off as a rom-com turns into a family drama before the plot takes a whacky turn at the fag end. Even the performances by the actors are mostly over the top. Perhaps it was the director who wanted the actors to exaggerate their expressions.

Fardeen rocks as long as he’s funny. But once he transforms into a broody, sleepy fellow after marriage, his performance takes a dip. Genelia D’Souza displays a narrow emotive range oscillating from wide-eyed stares to nagging squeaky tone of her voice. Tusshar is very well cast as a gauche Gujarati. Prachi Desai plays her part well. Anupam Kher is okay but why does Darshan Zariwala keeps scowling throughout his part? Govinda has lost his comical touch. The cameo by Amrita Rao fails to lift up the movie.

The film’s cinematography is good but music is mediocre.

To sum it up, ‘Life Partner’ is a film that offers nothing new.
